Greenery that belongs

For nearly a century this Category One Historic Place was Auckland's main post office. Now a three-level office for NZ Super Fund, it has been given a beautiful new fit-out by Jasmax - and the brief to us was deliberately restrained. Light touches of elegant, timeless greenery that suit the tall ceilings and fine finishes and feel right for the building.

Plants are placed to draw the eye up and soften the grand scale, with planters classic enough to look as though they have always been there. Kentia palms give height and filtered structure across all three levels, underplanted for fullness from day one. Statement figs anchor key sightlines. Monstera and philodendron add bold, glossy foliage deeper into the floor plate. The result is greenery that feels woven through the interior rather than added to it.

Planted with purpose

Container choice was as considered as the planting. Simple cylinder planters in soft white and terrazzo echo the heritage columns throughout the building, so the greenery pops while the containers sit quietly with the interior and will not date.

Species were matched to the light on each level. Larger, light-loving palms and figs sit around the perimeter heritage windows, while more shade-tolerant philodendron and aglaonema carry greenery into the deeper interior, so every plant is in conditions it can genuinely thrive in. The whole scheme was delivered in just two weeks from first enquiry to opening day, across an occupied, multi-level office. The staff describe it as a restful place to spend the day, a quiet contrast to the busy city below.
