A wintergarden reimagined

The inspiration for Rawhiti Estate's atrium garden came from a traditional wintergarden, a conservatory devoted to the cultivation of winter-blooming plants. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Architecture + Interiors for this boutique later living project in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the fully accessible atrium prioritises people, with cosy seated areas set into the planter beds so residents can admire and enjoy nature with ease.

Applying biophilic design principles throughout delivers genuine health and wellbeing benefits for residents. Those unable to visit in person can still enjoy views of the wintergarden from their apartment, while six large moss and plant walls line the sides of the atrium. The beauty of this garden has become a key drawcard for people choosing to live at Rawhiti Estate.

Designed for people, and for change

The garden was designed to be easily reconfigured, with custom-designed, movable planter beds that let the space be rearranged for events and functions. In-built, ergonomic seating within the planters, complete with matching coffee tables, turns the garden into a genuine destination for residents, rather than simply a backdrop.

Custom telescopic lights set within the planter beds encourage the growth of light-loving flowering species, keeping the garden changing with the seasons. The result is an impressive, nature-filled space where interaction between plants and people is actively promoted and celebrated.
